Words with Origins in Mythology
The ancient Greek world, much like today, was an age of great discovery. The inhabitants of ancient Greece did not have to go far to give meaning to the world around them and its many wonders. Many of the phenomenon, or unexplained occurrences, the ancient Greeks could not explain through science, they explained through the telling of stories that later became myths. Natural occurrences like the changing of the seasons, the blowing of the wind, the rising of the sun, and the eruption of a volcano were credited to the gods of mythology and their power. Here are some examples of words we still use today that were inspired by characters of myth. Can you think of any others not included in this list?
